What I’m offering: Let’s chat for an hour, three times over the course of a month. I’ll talk you through steps that will lead you to writing a college essay that is authentically you and will charm the pants off of admission counselors. My constructive criticism is known for making students feel like rock stars, and my habit of inventing weird metaphors will help inform your future writing. We can chat online or in-person (if you’re in the Boston area).
What I won’t do: I won’t tell you what to write about, write your essay for you, or sit over your shoulder while you write. No one likes that.
Who even is this guy? My name is MJ Halberstadt, I worked in Undergraduate Admission at Emerson College for over 8 years, earned my MFA in Creative Writing (Playwriting, to be specific), and currently teach screenwriting (also at Emerson). I’ve read thousands of college essays, and know what works, what’s risky, and which Common Application prompt is just the worst. For a sliding scale fee, I can guide you in writing an essay that your admission counselor will forward to their colleague with the subject line “Read This!”.
What's this about a sliding scale? My usual rate is $80/hour, with a discount of $200 for the full three-session sequence. This is on the (very) low end for coaches on those fancy-schmancy tutoring service websites, but if you're a student paying your own way, we can totally negotiate.
Talk to your folks, and e-mail me at MJHalberstadt@gmail.com when you’re ready to get started.
